07.06.00: Premiere Race in Finland Live on TV - World Championships in 2001?

Park World Tour Gathers the World Elite

Premiere Race in Finland Live on TV - World Championships in 2001?

The World Cup leaders Hanne Staff and Tore Sandvik can look forward to a tough fight when they stand on the starting line inside the Hamina
Fortress on the south-east coast of Finland on Thursday, 15 June.

The first race of the Park World Tour 2000 will gather the world's best orienteers, and the battle for supremacy will be broadcast live on TV and will also feature in the national pools betting system in Finland.

The PWT 2000 season will also pave the way for what can become an official World Championships series in Park orienteering from the year 2001
onwards. A decision will be taken by the IOF Congress in Austria 1-5. August, where the PWT Champions' Week will also be held at the same place.

The Champions’ Week will attract teams from more than 35 nations.

This year's Tour will also take the top orienteers to Sweden, Slovenia, Norway - and an exciting final week with the first international race in Bangkok, Thailand with the concluding events in the big Chinese cities of Shanghai and
Kunming.

Mogensen - Defending Champion

The premiere in Finland will be the first big event in Europe for the world elite, after starting their season with World Cup races in Asia and Australia.

Allan Mogensen of Denmark is set to defend his 1999 PWT title after an impressing victory in the opening World Cup race in Japan. He will be challenged by the current trio at the top of the World Cup rankings - Norwegian Tore Sandvik and the Finns Janne Salmi and Jani Lakanen, who will be expecting strong support from the crowd on their home terrain.

Rostrup, Stevenson - New Names

Interesting newcomers on the Tour are young Jorgen Rostrup of Norway, the current World Short Distance Champion, and Jamie Stevenson of Great
Britain, this season’s rising star with a surprise win the World Cup short distance race in Australia, followed up by a second major victory at the Swedish Long Distance Championships one month later.

Rudolf Ropek, the Czech superman who has finished 2nd, 1st, 1st and 2nd in the four previous PWT seasons, was narrowly defeated by Mogensen in 1999
and is now looking for revenge. Another Dane, Carsten Jorgensen, the former European Cross Country Champion, is also aiming for a top position on the 2000 Tour and will be one of the names to watch in Hamina.

Staff - Top Tip Among The Women

Among the women, the 1997 and 1999 Champion Gunilla Svärd of Sweden, will not continue her series of 9 PWT race victories this season as she is expecting her first baby in August. Like Finland's Johanna Asklof - another of the new "orienteering mothers" - she is preparing for a
successful comeback in 2001. Thus Hanne Staff of Norway, the 1997 World Champion, 1998 PWT Champion and the current World Cup leader, emerges with the lowest odds. After strong performances in the last PWT races of 1999,
World Championships medallist Lucie Bohm of Austria and Dorte Dahl,Denmark, are however both going for gold in 2000.

Kolkkala - the Only Finnish WinnerA new name tipped for the PWT podium is Swede Emma Engstrand, ranked as number 2 in the current World Cup rankings after winning the premiere in Japan.

The third spot in the Cup is currently held by Reeta Kolkkala of Finland, another hot name for a top position in Hamina. Kolkkala won the first
ever PWT season in 1996 - and is so far the only Finnish orienteer at all to win a Park World Tour race. A total of 75.000 US dollars will be shared
by the top runners in the 2000 PWT.

All 8 races will count in the overall standings.

105 Minutes Live on TV
The Park World Tour premiere in Finland – which will be covered by a live 105 minute TV broadcast – will start at 15.00 local time on Thursday, 15 June, with 25 women and 25 men on the stating line.

Both women and men will run the same course of 3.5 kilometres with 18 controls through the city of Hamina, its parks and fortress ramparts. The
expected winning times are 15 minutes for women and 12 minutes for men.

The start draw will be conducted on Tuesday, 13 June, and anyone can bet on the two best women and the two best men on the Finnish pools
(Veikkaus).
